ObjectivesThe aim of the present study was to assess quality of life before and after surgery for hemifacial spasm, in order to validate two specific quality of life scales translated in French. Surgical results and complications were reported.Material and methodsTwenty-three patients with hemifacial spasm treated by microvascular decompression were retrospectively included. The HFS-8 and HFS-30 quality of life scales were translated from English into French using a forward-backward method and implemented on patients at least one year after surgery.ResultsMedian HFS-8 and HFS-30 values were respectively 16 ± 12.5 (range: 8–20.5) and 38 ± 38.5 (range: 23–61.5) before surgery and 0.5 ± 4.5 (range: 0–4.5) and 5 ± 17.5 (range: 1–18.5) after surgery, showing significant improvement in quality of life (P < 0.001). The internal consistency of both scales was excellent (Cronbach's alpha > 0.9), and they were significantly correlated (Pearson coefficient = 0.95; 95% CI [0.91; 0.98]; P < 0.0001). Success rates were 83% and 91%, respectively, after primary and revision surgeries. Complications were transient with minor consequences in 80% of cases, but could impact quality of life when lasting.ConclusionsThese results support the validity of the French versions of HFS-8 and HFS-30. Microvascular decompression is a safe and effective treatment for hemifacial spasm, and these scales are reliable tools to assess postoperative quality of life.  相似文献

BackgroundLateral canthotomy is a vision-saving procedure. However, the low incidence of orbital compartment syndrome and the expense of simulators to practice this procedure can lead to low confidence and delays in the performance of the procedure by emergency physicians.DiscussionWe used a simple, inexpensive, easily assembled eye model for lateral canthotomy education at a residency program and a national conference obtaining feedback from simulation participants. Residents rated procedure laboratories that included the lateral canthotomy model as 4.9 to 5 (on a 5-point Likert scale, with 5 being the best score). National conference participants rated the model a 9 as a useful training model for practitioners on a 10-point Likert scale.ConclusionThis simple task trainer is practical, inexpensive, quickly assembled, and useful as a tool for practicing emergency medicine providers.  相似文献

Amphiphilic polymer conetworks (APCNs), which combine two different polymer nanophases, have a broad range of applications that involve their unique potential to separately swell one of these nanophases in a selective solvent. Little is known about the structural changes of such APCNs upon swelling in dependence on the topology. Here, conetworks composed of poly(2‐ethylhexyl acrylate) crosslinked by poly(2‐methyl‐2‐oxazoline) (PMOx) are investigated with small‐angle X‐ray scattering in dry and swollen state using the orthogonal solvents water and toluene. The data clearly show that the structural changes induced by swelling are strongly dependent on the topology of the APCNs. While water leads to fusion of PMOx phases resulting in larger structures than found in the dry APCN, toluene is only swelling the hydrophobic phases without structural changes.  相似文献

BackgroundVarious types of footwear fixation can dramatically alter gait characteristics, and could potentially contribute to an increased risk of falls in the elderly. However, no studies have been conducted to analyze the effects of footwear fixation on joint angle variabilities, particularly during the entire gait cycle.Research questionDoes the fixation of footwear significantly affect the lower limb joint angle variabilities during the gait cycle?MethodsPrincipal component analysis (PCA) was conducted on 20 healthy adults using 3D spatio-temporal data of the pelvis and lower limb joint angle that were collected during the entire gait cycle with the footwear in various conditions (well-fixated footwear, less-fixated footwear, slippers, and bare feet). Kinematic waveforms were reconstructed from the PCA data, which were used to determine the distinct differences in joint angle variabilities between footwear conditions.ResultsThe results showed large variability in the knee- and ankle-joint angles on the sagittal plane when walking in the loose condition (less-fixated footwear, slippers, and bare feet) compared with those in the well-fixated footwear condition.SignificanceThese results demonstrate the effect of footwear fixation on the joint angle variabilities of the elderly while walking. The increase in the knee- and ankle-joint angle variabilities when walking with less-fixated footwear could be a risk factor for falls.  相似文献

Previous studies have shown that Lycium barbarum polysaccharide,the main active component of Lycium barbarum,exhibits antiinflammatory and antioxidant effects in treating neurological diseases.However,the therapeutic action of Lycium barbarum polysaccharide on depression has not been studied.In this investigation,we established mouse models of depression using aversive stimuli including exposure to fox urine,air puff and foot shock and physical restraint.Concurrently,we administered 5 mg/kg per day Lycium barbarum polysaccharide-glycoprotein to each mouse intragastrically for the 28 days.Our results showed that long-term exposure to aversive stimuli significantly enhanced depressive-like behavior evaluated by the sucrose preference test and the forced swimming test and increased anxietylike behaviors evaluated using the open field test.In addition,aversive stimuli-induced depressed mice exhibited aberrant neuronal activity in the lateral habenula.Importantly,concurrent Lycium barbarum polysaccharide-glycoprotein treatment significantly reduced these changes.These findings suggest that Lycium barbarum polysaccharide-glycoprotein is a potential preventative intervention for depression and may act by preventing aberrant neuronal activity and microglial activation in the lateral habenula.The study was approved by the Jinan University Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee(approval No.20170301003) on March 1,2017.  相似文献

PurposeTo evaluate feasibility, safety, and results of endovenous mechanochemical ablation (MOCA) for treatment of persistent embryonic and dysplastic veins in pediatric patients with Klippel-Trénaunay syndrome (KTS).Materials and MethodsThirteen MOCA procedures were performed in 11 patients (age range, 4–16 years) with KTS and symptomatic persistent embryonic or dysplastic veins during a 24-month period. All patients were evaluated with color Doppler (CD) ultrasound (US), contrast-enhanced MR imaging, and venography to assess the anatomy of the target vessels and patency of the deep venous system. All procedures were performed under general anesthesia with a ClariVein catheter and liquid sodium tetradecyl sulfate as the sclerosing agent. US and fluoroscopic guidance were used in all cases. Technical success rate, primary occlusion rate, adverse effects, and recanalization rates were evaluated. Clinical and radiological (CD US) controls were performed 1 day, 7 days, 1 month, and 6 months after the procedure and once a year thereafter, with a mean follow-up of 16 months (range, 6–25 months).ResultsTechnical success and primary occlusion were achieved in all patients with no adverse events. During the follow-up period, CD US demonstrated partial recanalization and symptom recurrence in 2 patients (18%), 14 and 18 months after the initial procedure. These 2 patients had a second ablation procedure with no recanalization or symptom recurrence during the subsequent follow-up period.ConclusionsMOCA is feasible and appears to be a safe and effective technique for treatment of varicose veins in pediatric patients with KTS.  相似文献

BackgroundPercutaneous-short segment screw fixation (SSSF) without bone fusion has proven to be a safe and effective modality for thoracolumbar spine fractures (TLSFs). When fracture consolidation is confirmed, pedicle screws are no longer essential, but clear indications for screw removal following fracture consolidation have not been established.MethodsIn total, we enrolled 31 patients with TLSFs who underwent screw removal following treatment using percutaneous-SSSF without fusion. Plain radiographs, taken at different intervals, measured local kyphosis using Cobb’ angle (CA), vertebra body height (VBH), and the segmental motion angle (SMA). A visual analogue scale (VAS) and the Oswestry disability index (ODI) were applied pre-screw removal and at the last follow-up.ResultsThe overall mean CA deteriorated by 1.58° (p < 0.05) and the overall mean VBH decreased by 0.52 mm (p = 0.001). SMA preservation was achieved in 18 patients (58.1%) and kyphotic recurrence occurred in 4 patients (12.9%). SMA preservation was statistically significant in patients who underwent screw removal within 12 months following the primary operation (p = 0.002). Kyphotic recurrence occurred in patients with a CA ≥ 20° at injury (p < 0.001) with a median interval of 16.5 months after screw removal. No patients reported worsening pain or an increased ODI score after screw removal.ConclusionScrew removal within 12 months can be recommended for restoration of SMA with improvement in clinical outcomes. Although, TLSFs with CA ≥ 20° at the time of injury can help to predict kyphotic recurrence after screw removal, the clinical outcomes are less relevant.  相似文献
